Has Sony canceled the Spider-Man spin-off, El Muerto, starring Bad Bunny?

Bad Bunny's recent wrestling appearances appeared to have put him in a good position to take a starring role as a wrestler on the big screen.

The news about Sony's Spider-Man spinoff, El Muerto, starring the internationally renowned artist Bad Bunny, feels like a welcome plot twist straight from the pages of a comic book. But, what seemed like an exhilarating journey into the Marvel universe, with a chart-topping Puerto Rican musician at the helm, now appears to be on an indefinite hiatus, leaving fans in a state of suspense.

Bad Bunny's time in the WWE gives fans hope that he'll do El Muerto in Sony's Spider-Man Universe justice.

Initially, the news was met with open arms. The thought of Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, better known as Bad Bunny, flexing his acting muscles as the first Latino performer in a live-action Marvel feature appealed to millions. Not to mention, his transformation into the masked wrestling superhero Juan-Carlos Estrada Sanchez, also known as El Muerto, promised a narrative imbued with cultural authenticity, alongside all the expected high-octane action and thrilling escapades of a superhero film.

It also didn't hurt that Bad Bunny has had multiple well-liked appearances in the WWE, including a well-received match at WWE Backlash in Puerto Rico against Damian Priest, that even generated conversations about the event being permanently held in his hometown.

Bad Bunny has both the acting and wrestling chops to portray a believable El Muerto on the big screen.

But as it turns out, the world will have to wait a little longer, or maybe indefinitely, to witness this spectacle. The unforeseen intersection of an ongoing writer's strike in Hollywood and Bad Bunny's immovable touring schedule generated quite a bit of a predicament. As a result, the originally slated release date of January 12, 2024, has been quietly erased from Sony's calendar, leaving a conspicuous void and sparking speculations about the future of the project, as per Variety.

However, it’s important to stress that Sony's decision doesn't mean El Muerto is officially canceled. It's better to think of the project as suspended in a web of uncertainty. One must also remember that Sony's Universe of Marvel Characters remains in a state of rapid evolution.

While El Muerto's fate hangs in the balance, other anticipated films, such as Kraven the Hunter and Madame Web are ready to launch, the former of which recently got a new trailer that teased a revised backstory for the iconic Spider-Man villain.

Let's not forget the wider context here. The El Muerto project is part of Sony's ongoing attempt to build a shared universe of Spider-Man-related characters. While past endeavors have met with mixed critical and commercial success, Sony seems determined to keep going, with characters like Kraven and Madame Web now stepping into the limelight. In fact, Sony’s animated Spider-Verse films have received both critical acclaim and audience appreciation, which indicates a desire for more exploration within this expansive universe.

Yet, the question remains - will the charismatic luchador El Muerto ever join their ranks? It's a question that only time will answer, although it's clear that fans worldwide are hoping for a positive update sooner rather than later.

We're hoping that El Muerto's arrival on the big screen isn't delayed any further than 2025.

The thought of losing El Muerto feels particularly poignant given its significance. The movie was not merely another Spider-Man spinoff, but a bold statement of cultural diversity in a genre that's often lacked adequate representation. With Bad Bunny in the lead role, El Muerto was set to be the first Marvel live-action feature with a Latino performer at its core.

Now, the wait for the next update for Bad Bunny and El Muerto begins.

  1. Was there a lot of people actually looking forward to this to begin with? I mean no hate, I am sure there were some people but I don't know anyone personally that cared. I like him as a wrestler, huge fan. Don't care to see him do acting tbh.
