Gal Gadot’s time in DC has officially ended. She now joins the list of Justice League actors Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck not returning to the franchise.
While James Gunn vehemently denies firing Gadot from DC, she is effectively out after the cancellation of Wonder Woman 3. One of the first moves that Gunn and Peter Safran made after their appointment as DC Studios co-CEOs was to shelve Wonder Woman 3 "in its current state."
With the cancellation of Wonder Woman 3, the actor said that she feels empowered to no longer be attached to the DC Studios heroine. In a recent interview for her upcoming Netflix movie Heart of Stone, Gadot said that it felt liberating to be able to work on other projects.
"To me, starting and developing stories that I'm passionate about is an incredible thing," Gadot said in an interview with Total Film. "The fact that I don't have to sit still at home and just wait for the next offer is something that makes me feel empowered. I enjoy doing it, it keeps me alive."
"I'm not only going to do my own projects, I'm going to work as an actress-for-hire still. But the fact that I can go ahead and tell the stories that I'm passionate about – from ideas that I conceived, or from ideas that I find fascinating from people that want to partner with us – it's an incredible thing."
"[It's] something that I'm so grateful for and I am definitely going to continue that because it's worth it. I'm very, very excited and humbly proud," the actor concludes.
DC Studios announced last December that it was no longer moving forward with Wonder Woman 3 after meeting with the film's director, Patty Jenkins. The script written by Jenkins reportedly didn't align with Gunn and Safran’s vision of the new DC Universe.
Jenkins submitted a draft of the script for Wonder Woman 3 and it was not approved. The director opted not to revise the script and was reportedly canceled afterward.
Gadot made two surprise cameos as Wonder Woman this year even as her third solo movie was scrapped. Wonder Woman was part of Shazam! Fury of the Gods as Shazam’s new love interest. She also made a surprise cameo in The Flash.
Gadot’s next project is Heart of Stone, but she's also expected to return for at least one more Red Notice sequel.
Gal Gadot will go on to find other roles for sure.
I bet she does! She did an amazing job and the doors for new roles have opened up for her finally.
